The GCMS-4 is the ideal measurement system for gonio-apparent materials. These are materials that change color appearance depending on the viewing and illumination angles. Examples are pearl-mica coating surfaces and interference pigments. For these types of materials, this gonio-spectrophotometric color measurement system can measure its color by measuring the spatial distribution of reflected (or transmitted) light at user-selectable angles of illumination and detection.

The basic operation and theory of the GCMS-4 is similar to the GCMS-3B. Read that page for general capabilities of these goniospectrophotometric systems. The GCMS-4 features increased angular resolution and control. One major exception to this is that the GSP-2/GCMS-4 can also measure transmittance, also as a function of angle in the same fashion as reflectance.
